Summary of the Stockhausen Courses for Music in Kuerten 2004

From July 31st to August 8th 2004, the seventh annual Stockhausen Courses took place with 132 participants from 25 countries (all 5 continents), including 31 composers, 12 musicologists, 42 interpreters, circa 25 music experts and numerous auditors.

In 9 concerts with an average attendance of about 400 listeners per concert, 17 Stockhausen compositions (including 6 world premières) were performed by the 9 musicians of the master class faculty, and 12 Stockhausen works were played by course participants.

The best student performers – representing 8 nationalities – were awarded 10 prizes:

Marie-Hélène Breault, piccolo flute (Canada);
Michele Marelli, basset-horn (Italy);
Marc Maes, synthesizer (Belgium);
Horacio Lavandera, piano (Argentina);
Karin de Fleyt, flute (Belgium);
Stuart Gerber, percussion (USA);
Marcelo Daniel, clarinet (Argentina);
Rumi Sota-Klemm, clarinet (Japan);
Sun-Young Nam, piano (Korea);
Oleg Dziewanowski, percussion (Poland).

In his closing words, Stockhausen stressed that he was very happy about the extraordinary quality of the interpreters, the concentration and high level of the participants in his composition course and the wonderfully harmonious atmosphere during the courses.

The next courses (10 concerts, master classes and composition seminars) are expected to take place from July 30th to August 7th 2005, with rehearsals taking place from July 17th to 29th 2005.
