Letters To Kürten Mayor Herrn Ulrich Iwanow
In Support of The Stockhausen Courses

Dear Mr. Iwanow,

Being convinced that the accusations against Karlheinz Stockhausen are false and absurd, I urge you to give him all your support. In times of political crisis, we need serious, contemporary art more than ever.

I am concerned to find what we have so often called The Free World, is so fragile and susceptible to political correctness and the manipulation by a single individual, such as the journalist interviewing Karlheinz Stockhausen. Concerned that what should be a sound political environment such as yours, are so quick in condemning Mr Stockhausen based on a cleverly revised statement, omitting a single word and thereby creating a "good story". It seems to me it is such a manipulative individual which you should be condemning - not an artist such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, who over the years has proven his integrity.

Yours sincerely

Dear Ulrich Iwanow, Burgermeister

I am a man who are superintending the homepage of Stockhausen in Japan.

The utterance of Stockhausen to the terrorism which broke out in the United nStates is extremely distorted by mass communications, and is told. I know his real intention.

The utterance of Stockhausen does not affirm terrorism. He said that it is devilish demeanor. Please do not misunderstand him if you please. He is one of the greatest artists in the present age. Please access his website if you please and understand his real intention.

I need your help well pleasing.

Dear Honorable Mayor Iwanow,

I have been Kürten as a participant of Stockhausen-Kurse Kürten since 1998. I love Kürten very much, the land of beautiful landscape, nice people, friendly atmosphere, and as the place of the most important Music Center of our time.

At 1998, Kürten gave me a key to change of my life. I have made many friends internationally.

At 1999, my wife Kikuyo and I visited Kürten as our honeymoon site directly after Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After We came back Japan, I started Stockhausen Website in my own language.

At 2000, I visited Kürten alone, because Kikuyo was expecting our new family.

At 2001, I visited Kürten alone again, because Kikuyo was very busy with our baby boy Licht (Li-hito); we named him after Stockhausen's great work. His name means "Science" and "Kindness", "Reason" and "Consideration" in Japanese.

Kürten, the city of the highest art and friendship across the border.

I hope to visit Kürten again at 2002, I could not imagine there will be no Stockhausen-Kurse in Kürten any more.

I believe my faith rather than presses with malice. Because I met Professor Stockhausen personally, and my reliance is much stronger than defamation by uninformed journalist.

Mayor Iwanow, a cooperator of art in our time, you have not only a key to Kürten Community, but also keys to the model of statesmen's attitude toward art and artist in history.

Please, do not go along with an infectious fad.

I trust that Mayor Iwanow does NOT need any "Scapegoats" to prove his political correctness.

Sincerely yours,

Shuji Yamashita <http://member.nifty.ne.jp/stockhausen_info>

Dear Mayor,

As anyone who has heard Stockhausen's music, read his words, or attended his lectures knows that the reports that started in the German press and have now been circulated worldwide concerning his comments during the Hamburg interview are not true. It is truly absurd that someone would believe that Stockhausen would sympathize with terrorists or glamorize the atrocious events that recently happened in America.

It has come to our attention that the community of Kürten wants to cancel their much needed support of the Stockhausen-Courses. Without the support and the appropriations of the Kürten Community Office the courses will no longer take place. We feel that this would be a great loss to the many of us who recognize the importance of his work and teachings. It would, also, be a loss not only to the local community - the reduction of cultural and economic benefits - but a loss to the world community as well by disallowing the teaching of hundreds of creative minds who will shape our future through
*their* creative activities.

Honorable Mayor of Kürten, we express our deeply held interests in keeping the Stockhausen-Courses alive. We feel that in these difficult times, the community of Kürten should (and, we believe, will) show the rest of the world that they will not be swayed by petty innuendos and falsehoods fabricated by an unconscionable press.

best regards

Jim,

Thanks for your intense support of Stockhausen. Below my letter to Mr. Iwanow, with translation:

Hochachtungsvoll
Dr. Albrecht Moritz

Dear Honorable Major Iwanow,

With disgust have I received notice of the Defamation of Stockhausen, a great human being and a great composer. With sadness and disbelief I hear that the Community Kürten considers to suspend the honorary citizenship of Mr. Stockhausen and the support of the annual Stockhausen courses.

Is it not absolutely clear that Mr. Stockhausen has become the victim of a journalist craving for sensation, a journalist who quoted what Stockhausen said out of context? Is that not absolutely clear? How could the community of Kürten be taken in by such insanity? I hope it does not.

Whom do you believe more, a journalist lusting for sensation who, because of weakness of character and professional inability, takes hellishly devilish measures to enhance his career, or a great human being who has proven his humanity in his works in many ways and who has made Kürten known internationally?

I know Stockhausen personally, as an unusually cordial, warm-hearted and friendly person who takes time for other people. Never would this human being approve of terrorism, this composer who has composed TELEMUSIK and HYMNEN as music of whole mankind.

Please take the right decision to further support Stockhausen, a decision which is the only one that will give honor to your community in the long term. I also cordially thank you for your support of the Stockhausen courses thus far.

Sincerely yours
Albrecht Moritz

Dear the Honorable Herrn Ulrich Iwanow,

I am a Japanese singer, and I have been to Kuerten twice in order to attend Stockhausen-Courses 2000 and 2001. Kuerten is a very beautiful town, and I like this town very much.

Recently I heard that you are concerning about canceling the support of the Stockhausen-Courses, and I am very sad knowing this.

What many german press is saying is lie and I (and all participants of the Courses) know Stockhausen isn't such a man that praise any kind of violence including the unbelievable tragedy happened in USA.

HE LOVES "LOVE AND PEACE" as you know.

And, Stockhausen is the greatest living musician in the world. His music is as wonderful as musics of Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and so on.

So you can proud to the rest of the world the fact that this great artist Stockhausen is living in Kuerten and he loves this town.

Unfortunately there are bad histories many great artists were unhappy in there living days from lack of understanding to the artists. Now Stockhausen is going to be killed socially by many malicious reports. If he is killed socially, this will be a new part of these bad histories.

So I would like to ask your kind help.

At first, please think again about supporting Stockhausen-Courses. This course is very important for Stockhausen, and it has been enlightening many artists all over the world. That is why keeping this course is very important for art of the whole world.

And, please support Stockhausen himself. He is needing a lot of help to fight against this malicious reports. It would be much easier to recover his honor with your big support.

Sincerely yours,

Takashi Matsudaira

To Burgermeister Iwanow and the members of the council of Gemeinde Kürten, and all others who this may reach, greetings.

I have chosen to make my comments in English, not merely because my command of the German language is so bad, but also because I do not wish the temper of my words to be dampened by trying to translate my thoughts on this matter into a language with which I am not wholly conversant. My feelings on this current situation with Herr Stockhausen are very strong, and I feel they should be communicated strongly. Despite the linguistic circumstances of this communication, I do wish it to be entered into the public record regarding this matter, either translated into suitable German words or remaining in my own native tongue.

My background makes me rather well-suited to speak out on this matter. Not only am I rather versed in Karlheinz Stockhausen's work and in New Music in general as a composer and performer of such, I also have had extensive dealings with the "star-making" press machinery of my original hometown, Nashville, Tennessee. I am familiar, therefore, with how this machinery can work to build up someone or...conversely...tear them down. Add to this the fact that I have worked as a journalist as well, and my situation is complete.

Now, there is the matter of these horrible comments that Herr Stockhausen supposedly made. And to begin, I ask some rhetorical questions:

Did Stockhausen say these things? Yes, in fact, he did.

But was that all Stockhausen said in that press conference? No, in fact, it was not.

And therein lies the problem...the things that have been left unreported that Stockhausen did say in conjunction with these now sensationalized comments regarding the attacks on September 11. There is a great deal of deception being practiced here by someone who has excised some details from the reporting on this matter, deception that has an ulterior motive. Also, it should be noted that the question which Stockhausen was asked which resulted in this supposed reply was not part of the reportage; again, another interesting omission.

From the digging I've been doing, the comments made by Stockhausen occurred as a part of a line of questioning in a press conference in Hamburg, in which he was being asked some metaphorical and metaphysical questions regarding the _Licht_ characters Eva, Michael and Luzifer. While I have not managed to acquire a transcript of this conference...if, in fact, one even exists...I have been able to determine that the question which was asked can be paraphrased thusly:

"Do you see the characters Eva, Michael, and Luzifer as being things that are very real in our world today?"

Stockhausen's reply was that, yes, they were...and then went into the World Trade Center analogy about which all of this flap revolves. In this, he described the attacks as "The greatest work of art by Luzifer", making the analogy of these carefully-planned and executed assaults as being the cruel and evil work of some godless metaphysical artist, an agent of pure malice but great craftsmanship. And this is rather accurate, if perhaps a little deep for the average news-consuming audience.

Now, somewhere in all of that journalistic excellence at work, that"...by Luzifer" part interestingly disappeared, so that when this matter hit the public's eye, Herr Stockhausen was being made to look as if he were sympathizing...and even cheering on...the attackers and their co-conspirators. But the statement he made was far from this in its intent and actual meaning. Still, what came off the presses were, in fact, his words...minus a few key ones that made all the difference.

Why do something like this? Why, indeed...

The fact is, there's been factions of the music press...and even the regular press...that have been wanting to see Stockhausen take a serious, career-wrecking fall ever since his first performances in the early 1950s. But taking on Karlheinz Stockhausen in a fair fight, intellectually, is the equivalent of trying to go fifteen rounds with Muhammad Ali. He doesn't go down easily, if at all. So why not come up with an UNfair fight? Well...that's apparently what's going on here.

There's no way Stockhausen could sue for libel here. After all, those were his words that wound up in print. And that's the genius of this...the fact that some person or persons seized on his comment, removed just the right words, and turned him into a monster. But by extension, you could make Karlheinz Stockhausen say anything you wanted! Just take something he said, clip out the right things, reorder the phrases a little, and voila! Stockhausen speaks and says what YOU desire!

It's a nasty weapon, that technique. It's not one Stockhausen or his people would be familiar with either, because you usually see this sort of stunt in the sleazier sectors of the American press, usually the ones that deal with celebrities. That's not his usual neighborhood these days. But apparently somebody in the German press has been taking notes on our fine American yellow journalism techniques, and decided to put these new skills to the test on Herr Stockhausen. With disastrous results.

Which brings us back again to the question "Why do this?". Simple. Nothing looks better on your wall, or conveys bigger bragging rights, than a good trophy head. And Karlheinz Stockhausen's head would be quite something to hang over that metaphorical fireplace. If you did this as a reporter, you'd get the kudos of all the other people in your field who'd tried to take Stockhausen down and failed. Plus you'd also get the kudos of all those music people who've opposed Stockhausen and his work all these years. You'd get to be the King of All Ink-Slingers, because you burned someone of the stature and importance of Karlheinz Stockhausen with a cheap and sleazy takedown stunt. And all you'd have to do is take a phrase, remove a couple of words, don't make mention of the question that preceded them, and you've got it. The big trophy is YOURS!

Or rather, it would be yours if it wasn't so blatantly obvious that this was some sort of screw-job. And this is really, really screwy, to say the least.

So let's get back to the here and now of the matter. What's to be done with Karlheinz Stockhausen?

Answer: nothing.

The logical answer is nothing because if anything IS done, given the above circumstances, then all that the council and Herr Burgermeister Iwanow will have done is to be the unwitting dupe of some clown with a poison pen. If you like being some sleazy reporter's pawn, then sure...drop the hammer on Stockhausen. You're doing just what they want.

But having been in Kürten this past summer and seen the town and the people there, I'd like to think that those of you considering this matter are a lot sharper and more on-the-ball than that. In fact, I'm quite sure of it. I don't think you'd like to be played for suckers any more than Herr Stockhausen is enjoying being made "the patsy" in this awful matter. But whoever did that bit of scurrilous editing after that press conference is sure hoping you'll play along with their rotten agenda. They're betting on it, even.

And the Stockhausen Courses? They should go right on, as planned. If they get shut down, once again you'd be playing right into someone else's trickery. They'd love to be able to say that they trashed Stockhausen's main forum for addressing his work and a valuable symposium that draws people from around the world who are interested in that work. And whoever's done this wouldn't even have to lift a finger to accomplish it...just let the people in Kürten deal with that final trashing. In American carnival-speak, it's known as "suckering the rubes". I really don't think you'd like being put into that category.

No...leave the man and his work alone, unless you mean to support him and what he does. Because he needs that support, especially from his townspeople and neighbors. We're not merely talking about one of the most important composers since Beethoven here, but a man...one of your own...who's been dragged out onto the world-stage against his will in this awful matter, had words put into and taken out of his mouth as if he were some ventriloquist's dummy, and made to look like some lover of hate, violence, and mayhem. This is character-assassination of the lowest order, made all the more low by the fact that it plays on the pained emotions of the world at this desperate and ugly time.

Do not be taken in by this charade. Don't buy into this dirty trick. Please look and listen to the real circumstances here, and not the sensationalistic ravings coming in from people with vested interests in Karlheinz Stockhausen's downfall.

Thank you for your kind attention in this matter.

Dear Mr. James Stonebraker,

As a citizen of Kuerten and friend of Stockhausen-Music I - together with my whole familiy - like to support your campaign "HELP TO SAVE THE STOCKHAUSEN COURSES IN KUERTEN". The following letter that we wrote to the mayor of Kuerten Mr. Iwanow is written in German.

VERITATIS AMOR!

Dear Herrn Ulrich Iwanow,

I have been a participant at the Stockhauesn Courses Kurten for the past 4 years, and have greatly appreciated the use of the school for the courses. I have also been happy to contribute to the community of Kurten by economic support by visiting the local restaurants, book and clothing stores, food stores, etc., as do the other participants.

I have known Karlheinz Stockhausen since 1978, and am familiar with him both personally, through his published writings which I have read and studied extensively since 1974, and through a personal correspondance we have maintained since 1980.  Because of this background, I know that Stockhausen is one of the most honest and truthful people I have ever known, and also know him to be a lover of peace and democracy, against terrorist actions and totalitarian states.  I find this in his writings as well as in his person.  I have no doubt that he has been grossly misrepresented by the recent press releases relative to his interview in Hamburg, and urge you to continue supporting him as a person and for the use of the school in Kurten for the Stockhausen Courses 2002.  If these courses are no longer available because of deceptive actions by the press, not only Kurten, but Germany and the world will have a big loss as a result.  The Stockhausen Courses are known around the world, and yearly have participants from all over the world.

To misqoute and distort Stockhausen's words as the press has done, for whatever personal or political reasons, in my opinion, is a form of domestic terrorism, which should also be vigorously opposed by all people of high moral and ethical standards.

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephen Truelove

Verehrter Ulrich Iwanow,

Dear Honorable Mayor,

The intention to cancel the Stockhausen Courses in Kürten would be very unfair to your most famous resident.

Professor Stockhausen has been assailed libelously for remarks he did not even say. To jump to the conclusion that Stockhausen is wrong and the ONE journalist who wrote his sensational lies is correct is indeed a stretch.

If the city of Kürten is ready to abandon Stockhausen without even giving him the opportunity to defend himself and present the true facts of his case, it would be a reversion to the practices of a Germany past.

Before a decision is made by your city's elected officials, you should grant Stockhausen the opportunity to present his case. You know that Stockhausen is not the kind of man to sympathize with terrorists. Do not bow to the intolerance of an uninformed electorate.

Please be fair and understanding. Kürten owes Stockhausen at least that much.

Thank you and may God bless your deliberations.

Cordially,
