Preface to the Facsmile Edition-2001 edition of GESANG DER JÜNGLINGE
The general sketches, realisation score, working notes, and memoranda dating from the time of GESANG DER JÜNGLINGE were originally ordered in the following way:
I General sketches of GESANG DER JÜNGLINGE on loose DIN A4 pages in a portfolio;
II 1st manuscript of the realisation score on 10 loose DIN A4 pages divided into
I A (pages IV = later, sections AB),
I B (pages VIX = later, sections CD),
2nd manuscript of the realisation score on 24 loose DIN A4 pages divided into sections AF and contained in two portfolios;
III Working notes for the composition and sound material on DIN A5 pages in a ring binder, and in addition, on loose DIN A4 pages and on staff paper in another portfolio.
During Stockhausens absence in 1965, his assistant Hugh Davies attempted to make a fair copy of a realisation and study score. In this process he re-ordered the working notes to correspond with sections A - B - C - D - E - F of the composition (and a section G, which was never completely realised), thus combining the DIN A5 pages, the DIN A4 pages and the pages of music of the working notes.
IV Section G, which was not realised.
V Memoranda
In 1983, Jaynee Stephens made 10 sets of black-and-white photocopies of the sketches of GESANG DER JÜNGLINGE, each set comprising three DIN A4 ring binders and one DIN A3 portfolio:
Sketches I and II are in ring binder I,
sketches III 1)13) are in ring binder II [see pages in 89],
sketches III 14), IV and V (the latter is designated as "Memoranda made at the time of GESANG DER JÜNGLINGE") are in ring binder III.
The DIN A3 portfolio contains 2 pages of music (Stockhausens manuscript), a six-page "Draft of a study score of section F" (Hugh Davies) and an eighteen-page fair copy of section F (Hugh Davies).
9 sets of these photocopies were acquired by:
1) Robert Schumann Institute, State College of Music in Düsseldorf, Germany;
2) State College for Music and Theatre in Hannover, Germany;
3) Prof. Rudolf Frisius, Karlsruhe, Germany;
4) Northwestern University Music Library, Evanston, Illinois, USA;
5) New York Public Library, New York, New York, USA;
6) Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, USA;
7) University of Western Australia, Reid Library, Nedlands, Western Australia;
8) Paul Sacher Stiftung, Basel, Switzerland;
9) International Music Institute, Darmstadt.
The 10th set is in the archives of the Stockhausen Foundation for Music.
From 1998 to 2000, Lilly Fritz scanned all of the original documents in colour, with the exception of the attempts at fair copying made by Hugh Davies in 1965. Thus, compared with the 1983 photocopy edition, the present facsimile edition omits Hugh Davies fair copies and includes only the first 10 pages of the Memoranda made at the time of GESANG DER JÜNGLINGE (designated as category V in 1983).
